Officer Quits as UK Probe Deepens Into Death of Stabbed Teen
"Three of the officers are still serving, one officer has resigned. As the (Independent Office for Police Conduct) IOPC has confirmed, they are all being treated as witnesses, so not subject to any current restrictions," a Hampshire Police spokesperson said in a statement.
Nowak, an 18-year-old university student, was fatally wounded in Southampton, southern England, on December 3, 2025 — stabbed by Vickrum Digwa, 23, who then falsely accused Nowak of assault when officers arrived. Rather than rendering aid, police handcuffed the injured teenager. Body-worn camera footage captured Nowak repeatedly pleading with officers that he had been stabbed and desperately requesting medical attention. He died shortly afterward. On Monday, Digwa was sentenced to life in prison for the murder.
The resignation came as Prime Minister Keir Starmer publicly reacted to the footage, calling it "harrowing" and signaling that accountability must follow.
"It's absolutely right that the IOPC is looking at this. There are serious questions for the police to answer," Starmer wrote on the US social media company X earlier Tuesday.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood did not mince words either, branding the killing "an act of pure evil" and stating that watching officers restrain a gravely wounded teenager was "a disturbing and tragic thing to see."
The IOPC, which is conducting an independent investigation into Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary's handling of the incident, confirmed Tuesday that its inquiry remains active and ongoing.
