UK Treasury Chief Pledges New Era of Industrial Growth

(MENAFN) UK Treasury chief John Healey pledged a “new age of industrialization” during his first Labour Party conference speech as chancellor of the exchequer, describing himself as a “proud optimist” who “believes in Britain.”

Healey announced that Rolls-Royce plans to invest an additional £300 million ($398 million) in its manufacturing facilities in Derby, Bristol, Glasgow and Rotherham.

“This is the new age of industrialization, this is the new confidence in Britain lit by this government, driven forward by business,” he said.

He said the government would take every available measure to support job creation and expand Britain’s industrial base, including directing more taxpayer funding toward British companies, employment and innovation.

Addressing young people who are not in education, work or training, Healey said the government has a “moral duty” to make sure no one is “write” off.

“The best thing we can offer a young person is not a benefit payment -- it's a first job with training and a wage,” he said.
